Bremen | November 2021: Anker Schiffahrts-Gesellschaft mbH and the Finnish company UPM-Kymmene Oyj, a leading company in the bio and forestry industry, have once again extended their contract for the handling of forestry products.
From January 01, 2022, Anker Schiffahrt will primarily handle pulp products for UPM-Kymmene in Emder Außenhafen at the Emskai berth and terminal for a further three years and forward it to many paper mills in Germany, Europe and overseas by barge, rail, truck or container. Anker Schiffahrt acts as a well-established shipbroker for all pulp imports as well as stevedore on board and warehouse operator.
With the signing of the contract, the two companies are continuing their cooperation, which has existed since 1983, and the regular services between the Finnish ports of Pietarsaari and Kotka and Emden, which have been in place since 1993, until the end of 2024. "We are very pleased to continue our deep partnership with UPM-Kymmene. The contract extension proves the appreciation of our work and that consistently maintaining a high quality of service throughout the duration of the cooperation is of great importance," says Jörg Conrad, owner and CEO of Leschaco Group and Managing Director of Anker Schiffahrts-Gesellschaft mbH. "This will continue to be another important pillar of our ongoing good cooperation with UPM. Even in the current difficult pandemic times, we have managed together without any restrictions to master the challenges, keep the supply chains stable and once again significantly increase the import volume despite the circumstances," adds Jan Remmers, Managing Director of Anker Schiffahrts-Gesellschaft mbH.
In addition, UPM-Kymmene is due to change its time charter tonnage. The current time-chartered vessels will gradually be replaced by newbuildings with environmentally smart LNG propulsion from the 1st quarter of 2022, which will significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions emitted by the transports. The use of LNG-powered charter vessels is another milestone in these efforts, and the environmentally friendly onward transport by inland waterway vessel from Emden to the Nordland Papier paper mill in Dörpen is also in line with the growing awareness of the climate.
